Ship Safety
We will attempt to cover shipboard hazards with the students upon arrival. However, the ship is a foreign environment with many subtle hazards. Students must understand the need to be attentive and conscious of their own safety at all times.

Basically: wear rubber-soled shoes, stay out of the rigging, do as you're told, don't leave the ship without informing the Captain, don't run and, most importantly -- think about your actions before you take them. For anyone who is unaware of potential shipboard safety concerns, the officers will be enthusiastically pointing them out.

Letters to Parents
It is wise to contact the parents as early as possible. Many teachers find it useful to send out the general information on the trip and the requests for adult safety officers immediately.

Closer to the date of the trip, send out emergency info forms (PDF), a things-to-bring list and requests for students' letters (for description, see the Suggestions page). It's helpful to involve the parents -- and especially those participating as safety officers -- as much and as soon as possible.

Safety Officer Recruitment
Four to Six adults (per evening) are to accompany the participants on their voyage. If your students will be joined by other participating groups, check with our office regarding the need for safety officers.

Generally, we ask that at least one adult accompany each group so that no student is without a friendly face. Included in the Overnight Program Section is a Safety Officer Introduction (PDF) which, along with the Adult Participation Sheet (PDF), you should print and forward to all participating adults.
