HELP KEEP THE SANTA MARIA SHIP/MUSEUM AFLOAT!
The current plans for the Santa Maria is
to cut the ship into 10 pieces, crate and store her until enough money is raised to do her
restoration. SHE IS IN DANGER OF GOING AWAY FOREVER. We need your help to save this
important community asset.
The Santa Maria was built in 1991 to celebrate 500 years since Christopher Columbus made his
first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. She serves as a history museum offering educational
tours and programming. It is an exceptional teaching tool, and not just for history. Mathematics,
science and engineering are everywhere: in navigation, rigging and sails, ocean currents,
celestial navigation, nutrition, and human endurance. Even the youngest children board the ship
with a look of amazement, returning years later for pirate birthday parties and sleep-ins,
memorable parts of a childhood.
Before the City of Columbus invests the money needed to build a new docking system and visitor
center to replace those demolished to in the GreenWay Dam and Scioto Mile projects, they want
assurance that the ship will be sustainable for another 20 years or more. Thus they have asked
Santa Maria Inc., the non-profit that operates the ship, to demonstrate community support by
raising $990,000 to have her restored, guaranteeing her continued safety and viability for the future.
Letís show the City of Columbus that "we, the people" LOVE THE SANTA MARIA!
Our ask is twofold:
1) Send us a minimum of $10.00:
Checks made out to Columbus Santa Maria Inc., 1111 East Broad Street LL, Columbus, OH 43205 or call the
ship during normal business hours, Wednesday thru Friday from 10-3 PM, Saturday and Sunday from noon-5pm.
We can do a Visa or MasterCard transaction over the phone or you can fill out the donation form here
on the Web site.
2) Forward this request in an email to everyone you know who might have an interest in the Santa Maria,
ships, in history or education.
The Santa Maria Staff and Board
THE WORLD WAS FOREVER CHANGED when, in 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail
searching for a direct trade route to the Indies. Carrying him was the Santa Maria, a 98-foot wooden
"nao", or typical cargo ship.
More than 500 years later, you can tour the world's most authentic, museum-quality replica of Christopher
Columbus' flagship. Guided tours dramatize the daring and determination it took for these explorers to set
out on their mission. Fascinating displays show the far-ranging impact of the encounter of
two worlds that existed in 1492.
